Maya Simone was born in Tokyo, Japan, and grew up in Sendai to a bi-cultural household with Japanese, Polish and Jewish heritage. She began training for music in the YAMAHA system at age three, taking the stage to perform at an early age. Her love of performing did not stop with music; Maya extended her interest to dance and modeling. Before her teens, she had began training for ballet at age nine, performed in a street jazz band as the band pianist, and appeared in a local newspaper, regional commercial, and national print magazine as a child model. By age thirteen, Maya received a grade 6 certificate in piano theory and performance from YAMAHA (the highest pre-professional grade), and was serving as a bridal campaign model for Miel Parque Hotel, a regional hotel chain in Japan.
After moving to the U.S. at age fifteen, Maya continued her training at Pasadena Dance Theatre in California under Cynthia Young and Laurence Blake, dancing in their second company. She was featured in roles from The Nutcracker, Graduation Ball, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Beauty and the Beast, and original choreography by resident artists. Between 2003 and 2007, she attended pre-professional summer intensives, including ABT Orange County, Joffrey Midwest, and The Rock School.
During her years as a student at Smith College (2008-12), Maya danced in productions of the Five College Dance and with Pioneer Valley Ballet under the direction of Thomas Vacanti and Maryanne Kodzis. At PVB, she served as guest dancer her final two years, dancing soloist roles in The Nutcracker, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. While studying abroad for a semester at Royal Holloway, University of London, she trained under Raymond Chai, and was part of the university’s contemporary dance competition team. Further, Maya was a proud member of Smith’s Smithereens, the 4th oldest all-female a cappella group in the country. In between school, she worked for the American Ballet Theatre and Boston Ballet as residential counselor, dance mentor, and translator. After receiving a B.A. in Music with an emphasis on Composition, Maya revisited modeling and further explored the realms of music and acting in LA, working as a live pianist at a local sushi bar. Notably, she was featured in independent songwriter, Kip Boardman’s music video and online vintage clothing line Ruche’s winter lookbook, and worked as the promotional model for G for Body Art Professional’s new line launch campaign.
Maya has since moved to Boston, MA, where she works full-time at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University, while also dancing for Tony Williams Ballet. As a freelance artist, she has performed two successful season of Urban Nutcracker and company launch showcase at the “Outside the Box” in Boston Commons; she has been featured as lead actress, model, and dancer in music videos by ATC, Pants Velour, and Gemini Wired; and she has performed in the SOWA Market Fashion Shows and RAW Artist Boston. She is now signed with ANCHORED talent group in NYC as a dancer, model and actress.
In her off time, Maya enjoys traveling to explore domestic gems and international wonders, photography, playing music with her family, sunbathing with her cat Jasmine, and discovering classic movies and literature.
